Joseph Fielding Smith's "Doctrines of Salvation"
Having finished volume one today, I know I will go back again and again to read in full or in part these clarifying words. Doctrine taught so pure so simple it can not be mistaken, in fact it states:
"There are in the gospel such things as mysteries. A mystery is, of course, some truth which is not understood. All the principles of the gospel and all truth pertaining to the salvation of men are simple when understood. Until it is understood, however, a simple truth may be a great mystery."
I have found this true in my own life, as I study the gospel, many times I have an "A-ha" moment where the Spirit teaches me something that seems very profound. Then, I'll attempt to share it with my wife, or someone and as I'm explaining it, all the sudden it seems so simple that I'm almost embarrassed that I found it profound to begin with.
'Doctrines of Salvation' while full of these nuggets, finds it's greatest value in keeping the doctrine pure of any outside philosophy and makes for a helpful filter for knowledge we may want to pass off as intelligence.
